Governors Island Residency

From August through November 2023, I meditated and considered the history of families over time though a series of smaller portrait paintings.

The scale change offered a more intimate view into the objects we hold close, keepsakes and views into the lives of loved ones before us and those who have departed. The warm toned series was influenced by the environmental and foliage changes on Governors Island in transition from summer to fall.

This collection of work honors the women who came before, allowing my being. Informed in personal ancestral research over the past two years, this tribute imagines the personalities and journeys of family whom I’ve known and those I’ve come to learn.

Celebrating their lives, acknowledging their losses and triumphs through mediums as multifaceted at their experiences. Inspired by legacy family photos, their regal and direct qualities join with luminous palettes of the Caribbean environments they lived in. Layered with style influences of the African diaspora and an inherited spirit of optimism.

An invitation to recognize all those whose colorful lives led to our own.
